Gmail - what, why and how

Gmail is a Google-owned, web-based email service that includes over 2 gigabytes of storage (and growing).

What is so great about Gmail?

Compared with POP3/Outlook combination, Gmail is web-based and offers you the flexibility of checking your email from any computer with Internet connection.

Compared with other web-based email systems, Gmail has several nice features:

What do I do with my existing email addresses?

You can still keep your same email address. Simply create a Gmail account and have all of your email forwarded from your existing accounts into your new Gmail account.

Gmail allows you to add multiple email accounts and choose to reply to an email using the address it was sent to. For example, I receive all emails sent to lin@newcircleconsulting.com in my Gmail account. When I reply, the email is shown to be sent from newcircle@gmail.com on behalf of lin@newcircleconsulting.com. This way, people who are familiar with your email address can still recognize where the email is from.

Need more reasons to switch?

Different people find different ways to use Gmail. To me, Gmail also serves as a file storage system. Documents sent back and forth as email attachments now are also accessible from any computer. I can download, and then work on a project when I find a few minutes, wherever I am.

Quick Tips

Meta Tags: Two important meta tags are "Keywords" and "Description." These two tags are to help search engines gain a better understanding of what the webpage is about.

The two tags are not visible to human visitors. But the text you put in for the Description will be displayed on the search results page, right below the link to your site. (If your webpage is listed to begin with.)

Check Your Meta Tags: On your browser, choose "View" then choose "Source" or "View Source," and look for <meta name="keywords" content=...

Good or Bad? Keywords are what you want people to search and find your website. Good keywords are relevant to your business and not too broad. For example, compared with just "food," "pet food" is a better keyword if you are selling pet food. It's ok to get specific "cat food canned" if you can put many in to cover all varieties.

Case Study

New Circle participated in developing the community website for Coachella, a music and arts festival held annually in California.

The neat thing is the tight integration between two different websites: Buzznet and Coachella Community site.

When fans register for an account at the community site, a dual account at Buzznet is also created in the background. Fans can post photos, blogs posts, and any other kinds of information to Buzznet and the information will be pulled and displayed on the community site.

Click on the link below to visit the site:

And note that the blogs and photos at the lower half of the page are pulled directly from the Buzznet website!
