Web company helps promote Scuba programs for the physically impaired.
Chicago, IL - February 14, 2006 - The Diveheart Foundation, which organizes scuba diving and snorkeling programs for physically impaired children and adults, received an early valentine this year from NewCircle Consulting, a Web development company based in the Chicagoland area.
NewCircle created a newsletter that is broadcast via e-mail to Diveheart members, donors and others interested in the foundation's volunteer services. The monthly newsletter helps focus attention on Diveheart's mission and accomplishments, while directing visitors to the foundation's main Web site for more information and resources.
"We realized that even though we had a Web site, we still weren't harnessing the full power of the Internet," said Jim Elliot, president of Diveheart. "This newsletter makes it easier to get more people involved with our mission."
Generally, Diveheart volunteers are the ones who give out the "valentines," when they organize snorkeling and scuba adventures for people who wouldn't normally consider tackling the sport.
For example, the inaugural February Diveheart News Flash features a story about Jessica, who was just 17 and a member of her high school diving team when she was paralyzed by an accident during a dry land practice session. Jessica started receiving therapy for her injury at the Shriners Hospital for Children in Chicago, and she was shocked one day when her care coordinator asked if she wanted to go scuba diving.
"Of course I would, but I am paralyzed," Jessica replied. However, eventually she agreed to a week-long trip to the Florida Keys, for a scuba diving program led by Shriners staff and Diveheart volunteer divers. In the February Diveheart newsletter, Jessica reports on her trip - including the "unbelievable" experience of the underwater reef, the pride she felt in receiving open water certification, her new friends, and her renewed energy for college and additional physical therapy.
"I was touched by the Diveheart story," said NewCircle founder Lin Chen. "They have a terrific program, but I could see that they could benefit from some new tools for getting their message out." NewCircle plans to continue to provide Web design and development services in support of Diveheart's mission in the months ahead.
The Diveheart Foundation was founded in 2001 in Illinois as a non-profit tax exempt (501-C3) organization to provide educational scuba diving and snorkeling experiences for physically impaired children and adults. Diveheart programs give participants an opportunity to experience the "weightless" buoyancy of the water environment, instilling a "can do" spirit that helps participants handle physical challenges back on land.
